FIO Photo Sharing Policy

The Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) is dedicated to fostering collaboration, research, and public awareness of oceanographic endeavors. As part of our mission, we often document activities aboard our research vessels to share the impactful work conducted by students, researchers, and other collaborators.

Purpose of the Policy

This policy outlines the guidelines for photo sharing, ensuring clarity and respect for individuals while allowing FIO to promote its mission and activities.

Policy Statement

By boarding an FIO research vessel, you acknowledge and agree that:

  1. Photography and Videography
    • FIO staff or representatives may capture photographs or videos of activities aboard the vessel, which may include identifiable images of students, researchers, and other participants.
  2. Use of Images
    • FIO may use these images for purposes such as educational outreach, promotional materials, publications, social media, and reports.
  3. Opting Out
    • Individuals who do not wish to have their image shared publicly must notify FIO in writing before boarding the vessel. This notification should be sent to cssharp@usf.edu & robwalker@usf.edu or communicated directly to the vessel’s lead contact prior to departure.
  4. Image Ownership
    • All photos and videos taken by FIO staff or representatives during activities aboard FIO research vessels are the property of FIO. Participants retain no rights to review or approve the use of such materials.
  5. Third-Party Photography
    • If participants take their own photographs or videos aboard the vessel, FIO requests that they credit FIO in any public sharing of such materials.

Respect and Sensitivity

FIO is committed to using images in a manner that respects the dignity and privacy of individuals. Images will not be used in contexts that could be deemed misleading, defamatory, or harmful to the subject(s).
