R/V Weatherbird II
The
R/V Weatherbird II has been the flagship of the FIO fleet since February 2009 following its acquisition and renovation. The 115-foot, 194-ton vessel has since become one of the nation’s most storied research vessels after its repeated voyages to carry out scientific missions in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill catastrophe.
The Weatherbird II is equipped with advanced laboratories, oceanographic devices and sensor technology designed to enable scientists and students to study and learn about various aspects of the ocean’s biological, chemical, geological and physical characteristics. Researchers use the vessel to support advanced studies on myriad of complex issues impacting global and coastal oceans, as well as life in the sea.
Capt. Matthew White leads the crew, along with Assistant Capt. Brendon Baumeister, Chief Engineer Mike Adams, Assistant Engineer George Guthrow, Chef Thomas Lee, Deck Hand David Coy and Marine Technician Andrew Warren who all play an integral role in the safe gathering of water and marine life samples.
In response to the Deepwater Horizon spill, the Weatherbird II and her crew have made repeated journeys to the spill zone as part of the Natural Resources Damages Assessment, working on concert with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and in carrying out National Science Foundation-supported research.
